Greetings from Merida – Yucatan Peninsula

Client update on house plan purchase
The Yucatan Peninsula located in SE Mexico between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea enjoys a year round climate that is hot and humid. This region has a deep cultural heritage that is still prevalent today, including some houses built with straw rooftops.
Although our client had us make some changes to our Cordova house plan, changing the roof to straw was not one of them. We did though, increase the covered lanai to help to shade the house from the strong Caribbean sun and add an outdoor fireplace & outdoor kitchen for more al fresco dining options.
Below are pictures of the modified Cordova house plan in progress as it is being constructed in Merida, we are going to be featuring more photos in other blogs as the progression of this house continues. You will notice a different technique from the Unites States, they use wood beams for support (sometimes called bush poles) as they are building, and this is very common for the entire region.
