Kitchen Design Trends for House Plans in 2018

The 2018 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study has been released, and we’ve sifted through the data to summarize the trending highlights in kitchen design for house plans in 2018.  We’ll look at the functional and design priorities driving the latest kitchen design choices as well as the most desired styles.

Let’s Talk Functionality

Of all the functional priorities in kitchen design for home plans, storage tops the list in 2018.  Decluttering countertops seems to be an obsession among homeowners that is being addressed through more cabinet storage and innovative organizers within cabinets.  Homeowners want to be able to find things easily and don’t want to see it all displayed on the counter.

After storage the priorities are livability, then entertaining, being easy to clean, providing a gathering space for the family and cooking.  Technology is also a concern, and so there has been a rise of built-in charging docks.  Appliances are smart with features like touch screens, wireless compatibility and voice controls.

Kitchen Layouts in 2018 Home Plans

According to the Houzz study, 50% of respondents want their kitchen to be open to other interior spaces, while 20% want more opening to the outdoors.  The L shape is the number one kitchen layout, with somewhere around 39% of homeowners also desiring an island.

Design Priorities & Style

Not surprisingly, aesthetics are highest on the list of design priorities, and the most sought-after kitchen styles are transitional, contemporary and farmhouse.  Respondents also want a kitchen design that integrates well with the rest of the house, reflects their personal style, allows in lots of natural light, makes a statement and enhances resale value.

In the finishes department, white is gaining popularity in countertops, backsplashes and wall finishes.  Countertops are where people are willing to splurge most often with quartz edging out granite as the most chosen material.  Shaker and flat-panel cabinet doors are in this year, and in flooring hardwood, engineered wood and laminate are the most chosen materials followed by ceramic and porcelain tile.

The Weber Design Group collection of nearly 300 house plans offers a wide array of kitchen layouts to appeal to a variety of tastes and includes the most desired layouts of 2018.  Start your house plan search here.
